August 21 – Dog Days of Summer

Our Toastmaster Don Gorman selected the theme Dog Days of Summer given our recent hot weather. This familiar phrase actually comes from the Greeks who believed the Dog Star “Sirius” was responsible for the hot weather based on its proximity to the sun. Our grammarian selected “Noisy” as our word of the day, but suggested participants try to use it in the context of his son’s definition, who inquires “What’s that noisy?” when discovering a new sound.

Our first speaker Laura identified a few of the modern diets in rotation today and the one she has been practicing for several years. The Zone Diet is a system geared to ward off diabetes through a select balance of carbs, proteins, and fats that manage insulin levels. Laura shared the Zone Diet allots a piece of cheese and glass of wine as an evening snack, so you can still “Eat, drink, and be merry AND still be on your diet!”

Our second speaker Jacki provided some safe cleaning alternatives for us to use in our homes, over the toxic cleaning chemicals on the market. Her “green cleaning trinity” consisted of vinegar, baking soda, and Dr. Bronner’s Organic Castile Liquid Soap. The trinity can be used to clean windows, countertops, even clogged drains! It won’t hurt to give it a try.

Our third speaker and Former Club President Amie Pease expressed her thanks to the former club officers and to the club members for another successful year. Amie accepted the Presidents Distinguished ribbons for 2010-2011 and 2011-2012, along with a Home of Area Governor ribbon on behalf of the West Seattle Toastmasters Club #832.

For Table Topics, Bridget reflected on those final lazy dog days of summer before the responsibilities of school resumed. She invited participants to share a favorite summer time topic. Our guest Dom shared his favorite but odd ice cream flavors, churned at the Full Tilt creamery in White Center; others mentioned a favorite cool spot to go swimming or hiking.

Farewell to flip flops, and long summer nights. We hope to see you at the next meeting, the Club’s annual “Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contest.”

To commemorate the 2012 Summer Olympics our Toastmaster Jacqueline exchanged handshakes for high-fives and kept our speaking athletes hydrated with POWERADE®. Grammarian Thad selected “Synergy” for the word of the day, to remind us that a team working together will produce a greater total effect than the sum of individual members.

Our first athlete Jeff gave his Ice Breaker speech “That Sinking Feeling in My Stomach.” Jeff shared that he was once a “fear junkie” that loved the exhilarating rush of trying extreme sports. Now that he is settling down, Jeff has decided to exchange that behavior for another, and realized the “sinking feeling” through public speaking is a good healthy fear for his life.

Our second athlete Kathleen has been making great headway in the Competent Communicator division. While Kathleen was seeking out her next topic, she began to ponder how certain phrases came into the English language. Kathleen shared her true account of uncovering one common phrase. The story goes, one morning Kathleen discovered a collection of fresh “lawn ornaments” in her front yard, while observing these specimens with husband, they both raised their eyes to meet a full-sized-male bull from 10 yards away. Logically the combination of bull + fresh lawn ornaments ($*hit) was the result of this phrase bull$*hit!, and Kathleen concluded that sometimes “you just have to call it as it is.”

For Table Topics, our Table Topics Master, Mark shared his Olympics Gold Medal moment, which was the first time he won in a school track tournament. Mark invited others to share what felt like their “Gold Medal” moment and various club members shared their moment of Greatness.

In closing, many THANKS to all our participating athletes and spectators, we wouldn’t be here without your support. See you at the next event!
