Congratulations to Christine for placing 2nd in the Table Topics finals held November 11, 2017 at the Western Washington Toastmasters Fall Conference at the Lynnwood Convention Center. The competition was fierce, representing the efforts of hundreds of competitors from all over Western Washington, and at the end Christine stood at the victory podium.

The morning of the Conference featured several very educational presentations by top Toastmasters. Surely we will see the results at upcoming meetings! Between sessions and at lunch more than a dozen Club 832 members socialized with each other and with friends from other Chapters. Semi-Annual Conventions are a great opportunity to stretch out and touch persons from all over, learn new things and have a great time!Conference Attendees from Club 832

The Area 43 Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contest, Monday October 2nd, starting 6:00 pm at the Kent Senior Center, featured competitors from multiple clubs. It started with the opportunity to mingle and chat with Toastmasters from all over the District.

The first competition was Table Topics: each competitor was asked if they could have a dinner with anyone, with whom would it be and why? When the dust settled and the ballots were tallied, Christine won first place in Table Topics and John won 2nd.

Next came the Humorous Speech contest. When the laughter subsided, Randy won 1st place and Emily won 2nd. It was a clean sweep for our Club (surely a reflection on the quality of the evaluators and generally supportive atmosphere here! — ed).

Everyone is encouraged to attend this event, both to support our Club’s competitors and to enjoy an evening of award-winning speaking and laughs!

August 29 2017: Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contests

Our August 29, 2017 featured the annual Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contests. Hosting two contests at once required just about everybody to pitch in, either as contestant or serving in another role. Kudos to us all for getting everything done!

The Humorous Speech Contest came first, with Phil, Emily, Randy and Greg each providing 5-to-7 minutes of original, amusing material. For the Table Topics contest, contestant Christine and John were asked the same question, and so each had to be sequestered in another room while the other spoke. It was interesting to see how different speakers handled the same question!

Randy and Christine scored highest in their respective contests. They, and 2nd-place finishers Emily and John, will go on to compete at the Area 43 Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contest, Monday October 2nd, starting 6:00 pm at the Kent Senior Center. Everyone is encouraged to attend this event, both to support our Club’s competitors and to enjoy an evening of award-winning speaking and laughs!

Our August 15, 2017 meeting featured four very interesting speeches on very different topics:

  • Victoria: “Christmas in December, or Maybe Not”
  • Julie: “Banking Hours, Not Dollars”
  • Mark: “The Fate of the Tonquin
  • Laura: “Danger! Hot Exhaust – My Experience with Gaslighting”.

Mark won Best Speech, Julie won Most Improved, and Franni won Best Evaluation. With so many speeches and evaluations, we skipped Table Topics and went right to Announcements. Our VP Education, Emily, will be reaching out to all members to find out what everyone’s goals are, so we can ensure that our meetings provide the opportunities you need – so when you get the email survey, be sure to respond! Our Area Director, Brig, also said a few words of encouragement.

Our next meeting will be August 29, 2017 and feature our Fall Contests: Humorous Speech and Table Topics. Winners will go on to the October 2 Area Contest – all are invited!

Greetings, Club 832 members,
Last night’s International Speech and Evaluations contest was a spirited event!  We had a three contestants in each contest, including a last-minute signup by Forrest Sallee in both contests!  In the end, experience (and timeliness) won out, with Franni Turean taking first place in both contests!  Here are the final results:
International Speech:
  1. Franni Turean
  2. Forrest Sallee
  3. Phil Irvin
  1. Franni Turean
  2. Forrest Sallee

We had several visitors, and everyone else in the room had a role to fulfill.  We were graced by a visiting dignitary: Maria Smith, President of our neighbor club, Daystar Dialoguers, as our Guest Speaker for the Evaluations contest.  She also presented the awards to the winning contestants.

Hats off to our core contest team:
  • Contest Chair – Laura Bailey
  • Toastmaster – Karen Lezon
  • Chief Judge – Kate Christian
…and to the whole rest of the membership in attendance, who served as Timers, Ballot Counters, and Sergeants at Arms.
Franni will represent us at the Area 43 contest, on March 21 at the Kent Senior Activity Center (600 E Smith St, Kent, WA 98030).  The registration and potluck will start at 5:30 p.m.  By coincidence, that contest will be held on the same night as our club meeting, but I encourage anyone who can make it to go and cheer Franni on!  In the event that Franni is unable to make it to the competition, Forrest will fill in as our representative in both contests.
Please join me in congratulating Franni, celebrating all the contestants, and appreciating everyone for contributing their energy and enthusiasm to make the contest a success!

If you missed our Feb 7th meeting….

What a great meeting! We had lots and lots of fun! It was great to see some familiar faces that we haven’t seen for a while and that was so great. We had an icebreaker from Yusupha! It was amazing to hear about his journey from Africa to New York to Seattle. Than we had two seasoned speakers who did a fabulous job! Our next meeting is on the 21st of February. This is our International Speech contest meeting with the theme “Inspiration”. Hope to see you all there!!!
