what to expect
The environment in a Toastmasters club is friendly and supportive. Everyone at a Toastmasters meeting feels welcome and valued – from complete beginners to advanced speakers. In a club meeting, you practice giving prepared speeches as well as brief impromptu talks, known as Table Topics. There is no rush and no pressure: The Toastmasters program allows you to progress at your own pace.
Constructive evaluation is central to the Toastmasters philosophy. Each time you give a prepared speech, an evaluator will point out strengths and suggest improvements. Receiving – and giving – such feedback is a great learning experience. In Toastmasters, encouragement and improvement go hand-in-hand.
- Attend a meeting or two to see how the Toastmaster process works.
- Ask questions of the members or the officers to clarify what you’ve observed. Speak with the VP Membership to obtain a Guest Packet.
- You’ll find a Membership Application in the Guest Packet, along with the costs involved.
- Complete the application at the meeting, or bring the filled-in application to the next meeting along with a check.
- The Treasurer or the Secretary will enter you as a New Member with Toastmasters International. Toastmasters International will send you a New Member Packet which contains the Competent Communicator and the Competent Leader manuals. You will use the Competent Communicator Manual for your first 10 speeches.
- You will be assigned a Mentor to help you prepare for your first speech and to help you through your the next two speeches. Your Mentor is a resource to help you become more familiar with the Toastmaster path.
- Enjoy the journey, make new friends, and learn how to communicate more effectively!
